Residence Life is conducting a vacancy hire for the Spring 2026 semester to fill anticipated openings in both Resident Advisor (RA) and Apartment Manager (AM) positions. These appointments are for Spring 2026 only, with eligibility for rehire through the annual returning staff process for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Selected students will join an established team of returning staff serving in communities such as Connolly Hall, Palmerton Hall, Peterson Hall, Placer Hall, and Rocker Square I & II.

Spring 2026 Vacancy Hire Timeline

Both the RA and AM processes will run together through one application. Applicants will identify their position preference and answer role-specific questions within the same form.

Successful candidates will receive onboarding materials and January training details following the hiring decision.

Summer Crew and Facilities Team Opportunities

Join us at South Dakota Mines for dynamic roles in our Summer Crew and Maintenance & Facilities Teams. Our Summer Crew consists of 8 dedicated staff members who are essential in maintaining and painting residence halls, assisting with Summer Conferencing, and managing the Surbeck Desk during evenings and weekends. This team plays a pivotal role in keeping our campus vibrant and functional during the summer months.

Additionally, we offer opportunities for those interested in facility maintenance during the academic year. As part of our Maintenance and Facilities Team, you can contribute in two key areas. Firstly, as a Student Custodial Staff member, you'll be responsible for the upkeep of the Rocker Square buildings, a crucial role for maintaining our living spaces. Secondly, as a Student Facilities Coordinator, you'll engage in hands-on work across all residential facilities, handling minor repairs, general maintenance, and managing residential work order requests, as well as undertaking general office tasks.

These roles are instrumental in ensuring a comfortable and well-maintained living environment for our students.

Summer Crew staff provides maintenance and painting to the residence halls during the summer months. In addition, the summer crew staff provides support to Summer Conferencing by preparing rooms for summer occupancy.All summer staff participate in 24-hour on-call duty rotation all summer (evenings/weekends). Summer crew members must be able to work the entire summer. Summer Crew hours will be regular business hours, with occasional nights and weekends required.

Projects Summer Crew work on include, but are not limited to:

  • General maintenance in all residence halls and apartments
  • Cleaning
  • Painting
  • Guest Room cleaning and set-up
  • Assisting as needed throughout Surbeck Center
  • Outdoor maintenance and landscaping
  • Residence Life projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

This is a live-on student employment position with housing provided at a 75% discount in Rocker Square I. Verification of student status is required. Strong teamwork and communication skills are needed. Knowledge of painting and general maintenance is preferred. Summer Crew members must be available for on-call duties during evenings/weekends (3-4 weeks a summer), stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs. Candidates must pass background check to be employed. Summer Crew Staff must be able to work: May 10, 2026 through August 22, 2026.

Summer Surbeck Desk Staff provides evening and weekend support to the Surbeck Front Desk. This important position interacts directly with summer guests. Operation hours of the desk are: Monday-Friday, 3:30PM-9:00PM; Saturday-Sunday, 12:00PM-9:00PM.All summer staff participate in 24-hour on-call duty rotation all summer (evenings/weekends).

Surbeck Center Desk Staff duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Guest Check-In and Check-Out
  • Guest support and assistance
  • Guest satisfaction and complaint resolution
  • Guest room set-ups/conference room set-ups
  • Inventory, Check-in/out of supplies
  • Waivers and occupancy management
  • Assisting as needed throughout Surbeck Center
  • Other duties as assigned

Student Custodial Staff Positions are available through Residence Life. These staff assist with upkeep of the Rocker Square buildings. The next anticipated openings are for Summer 2025.

The Facilities Coordinator works throughout all residential facilities making minor repairs and performing general maintenance. In addition, this staff member reviews all residential work order requests and performs general office functions. The next anticipated opening is for Summer 2025 and 2025/2026 academic years.
